Disadvantages and Potential Pitfalls of Portable PCs

  • Cost.  Generally you pay a premium for a laptop compared to a similarly specified Desktop
  • Theft.  Because of the very nature of laptops, they can be stolen very easily
  • Upgrades. Upgrading a laptop can be more expensive because of the costs of parts and often the chips and processor are on a single ‘board’.
  • Ergonomics. Quite often, because the size of some laptops, it may be more difficult to use the keyboard and screen. A Desktop will allow you to place the keyboard and monitor at different angles for better and easier use
  • Heat.  Sometimes when a laptop gets too hot, it may shutdown automatically which can mean that important data might be lost.
  • Lifespan.  Generally, laptops are not as resilient as a Desktop.
  • Battery life.  Obviously having a laptop powered by an internal battery will give flexibility and mobility, but it can also be an issue especially when you are away from a power source and the battery might need recharging.
