Glossary of Content Filtering

Bandwidth.

Bandwidth is the amount of information that is allowed be sent or received by users of a network connected to the internet. This is determined by the agreement that an organisation has with their ISP or Internet Service Provider, determined by the cost and the amount needed. The more information that users need or send, especially in these days of people downloading music and films can slow down this process. It can be likened to a hosepipe – the wider the pipe, the more water it can carry and the quicker it will pass!

Chat.

This is a method of communicating between two PCs via the internet.  The main difference with chat and email is that it allows people to communicate instantly in real time. This means that as soon as someone keys in their words and presses the return key on their keyboard the text will appear instantly on the other monitor.
